Lists, lists, lists – I love lists. I can’t believe we’re almost to the end of July. My daughter goes back to school on August 10th and her school is about 3/8 of a mile from the house. We’re going to be walking to and from, which means I get to walk twice a day and that’s going to increase my number of steps. So here are five other ways you can add exercise to your day that don’t require you to hit the gym or the weight machines.
- Fancy a diet coke or a diet slurpee (yes, they do have them?) Or maybe you just had a craving for a candy bar. Take a walk to a nearby convenience store – then you can eat your candy bar or drink your drink with impunity on your walk back
- After work, provided it’s not 100+ degrees outside, pause to pull some weeds in the flower beds – ten or fifteen minutes a day and you’ll have a bit of exercise combined with a pretty flower bed
- In an airport? Walk alongside the automated walkways – see if you can keep pace with the riders
- Back to School Sales – Park in the back 40 of the parking lot and take a long stroll in and then take the long route through all of the school supplies – if you have a Super Walmart, once you have everything in you need, do one full circuit of the store before you hit the registers – that’s a lot of steps right there
- Keep a pair of casual shoes or walking shoes in your car, that way whether you are at work or waiting for the kiddos to get done with a dance or sports class, you can take a walk around the perimeter or city block while waiting
