I love it when home feels like a refuge from the rest of the world. It is important to create a space that allows your family to feel comfortable, loved and accepted no matter what. One of the best ways to do this is to have the spirit in the home at all times. It can be difficult to do this on a daily basis. Here are five resolutions to help your family bring the spirit into his home.
First strive to have family prayer and scriptures study every day. This is one of the best ways that you can consistently bring the spirit into your home. Even if your children resist the process at the beginning, it is worth continuing. They will adjust and your family will be blessed. Adding a song to family prayer can help younger children to focus and set the tone as well.
Second it is easier to feel the spirit when the house is clean. A clean home usually means less fighting and it is easier to find things, which prevents negative feelings as well. Everyone has different levels of acceptable cleanliness, and keeping a home too clean can cause negative feelings or it can be a distraction as well. If the cleaning is causing a problem or the messiness is causing a problem, try to find the balance that works for your family.
Third, turn off the television, and choose your music or other sources of entertainment carefully. The background noise in your house can really set or break the mood. You do not need to listen to classical music all of the time, if that is not your thing. Rather choose music that helps everyone feel happy and upbeat. Playing any music too loudly can distract from the spirit as well.
Fourth, set the example in how you treat your children, and how they are expected to treat each other. Taking the phone to the person it is for, instead of yelling up the stairs makes a difference. Going and getting everyone for dinner, instead of yelling makes a difference. Complimenting and praising good work sets a wonderful tone, as well as thanking people when they complete their chores.
Fifth, pray to have the spirit in your home. If you do this in your personal and family prayers, it can make a big difference in each day. It is important for your children to realize what you are working for as well.
