If you are like me you are always on the lookout for new ideas for family home evening, or at least new ways to present the same gospel topics. Coming up with ideas can be the most difficult part of planning family home evening. Here are five ideas that may help you to make your family home evenings more meaningful.
1) If you can sit down and plan out three to six months worth of lessons, you will have more time to prepare the lessons. You can plan ahead to include lessons for big life events. Of course you can adjust the schedule as needed.
2) It is a good idea to use the manuals and lesson topics that your children are already learning. You can pull lesson ideas from the Relief Society and Priesthood manuals. You can also use the Gospel Doctrine manuals. If you have younger children you may considering using the lesson they learned the Sunday before.
3) Do not forget to plan lessons for the special events in life. These may include a new baby in the family, a baptism, receiving the Priesthood, going on a mission and getting married. These events are special and important and you should honor them.
4) You can plan your lessons around the holidays. You can have a lesson on Easter, Christmas, honoring the country (on your country’s national holiday). You can have a lesson about mothers on Mother’s Day, and do the same for Father’s day. You can teach about gratitude and sacrifice around Thanksgiving.
5) One tradition my family did every year was to have a special family home evening the week of someone’s birthday. This lesson talked about how special the person was to our family, and we each shared one quality we like about that person. It builds a sense of unity.
