Five Resume Tips

Submitting your resume is your first opportunity to make a good impression on a prospective employer. Preparing an effective resume is your best chance to insure that you’ll be invited for an interview. Once in the door, you can show and tell the interviewer why you are the best person for the job.

While you should be honest and avoid embellishing your education and work experience, there is no reason you cannot really sell yourself. Make note of your most important accomplishments, awards, or anything else that will set you apart from other job seekers.

The following tips will prove helpful in impressing your prospective employer:

1. If an application is required along with a resume, fill out the application completely. If a question or comment does not apply to you, simply write N/A or “not applicable,” but do not leave any spaces blank. Be sure to print neatly when filling out an application.

2. You should always type your resume. If you do not have a computer or a typewriter, see if you can borrow one or check with the local library to see if they have one you can use. If not, ask someone to type it for you. You may be able to hire a college student for just a few dollars. Handwritten resumes look very unprofessional.

3. Use good quality paper for your resume. Twenty-weight is a good choice, and it absorbs ink well to prevent smudges and smears. Don’t bother with printed or colored paper. Some employers find it distracting, and they would rather be dazzled by your accomplishments than by fancy paper.

4. Do not fold your resume. Place it inside an envelope that is large enough to hold it without folding. Make sure the copy you turn in is fresh and clean with no stains or crinkles.

5. Always make copies of your resume. This way, if something happens you will have extra copies available instead of having to start all over.
