Five Summer Activities To Do With Your Kids

Adventures in a cardboard box

Do you only have days left in your summer?  Squeeze these fun activities into your last days of summer:

Five frugal ideas for summer fun (even if they are #lastdaysofsummer squeezed into a weekend!)

(1) Here’s one I would try if I could swim, a canoe trip. Sounds like fun! You don’t have to buy your own canoe, many state parks rent canoes by the hour or day.

(2) When I was a kid, we would have baseball games (and sometimes stickball-that’s baseball played with a stick instead of a baseball bat) in our backyard with some of the neighborhood kids. I still remember how much fun we had. I wasn’t very good at batting but I could run like the wind, so sometimes another player would bat for me. Why not invite some of your neighbors over for an old-fashioned baseball game. Be sure to have some hot dogs, popcorn and other snacks on hand and make it authentic!

(3) Have a camp out in your own backyard. You can set up tents, sleeping bags and even have a campfire. Then sit around the fire and roast marshmallows, make s’mores and tell scary ghost stories.

(4) Build a fort out of a large cardboard box, such as a refrigerator box.

(5) Finally, consider building a tree or clubhouse. When I was a kid, I always wanted a clubhouse. I was a big fan of Encyclopedia Brown and many of the other kids books that featured clubhouses. I would imagine what it would be like to have a no boys allowed clubhouse. A place where I could retreat to and read or just lounge on a long lazy summer day. You can buy pre-fabricated kits and plans or be creative and design your own.
