One item that people may consider including in their preparedness kits is a gun of some sort. Most people would consider a rife or shotgun for hunting. This is a personal choice that needs to be made each family. Here are five things that you need to take into consideration when thinking about purchasing a gun.
1) You should think about why you want the gun. Do you want the gun for protection or to go hunting in times of need? If you want it for hunting do you know how to hunt? Do you have a place that is safe for hunting nearby? Do you have money set aside for a hunting license?
2) Another thing you should consider is the safety of having a gun in your home. If you do decide on having gun in your home, it should be locked up. Your children should not have access to it. You should not store the bullets and then gun in the same place.
3) If you purchase a gun for safety or for hunting, you should know how to use it. This includes taking a gun safety class, and having regular target practice at a shooting range. If you do not know how to properly handle a gun, than it becomes a danger to you and your family.
4) Are you willing to take on the added responsibility that comes with owning a gun? There are liability issues that come with owning a gun, and you need to make sure that you are taking every precaution available.
5) You need to teach your children gun safety as well. This is very important. I have a friend who was shot while playing with a gun when he was six years old. He was paralyzed as a result. He knew he was breaking the rules when he played with his father’s gun.
I know several people who own guns, and take every precaution possible to ensure the safety of those around them. I know that people can save a great deal of money by hunting each year. It is a personal choice for each family, but once you make the choice to own a gun, you need to be responsible for the safety of those around you.
