Five Ways to Save Money on Food

Doing without things is a great way to save money. For example, you can cut out the cable bill, eliminate the cell phone and go without the vacations. But food is one area that is well, impossible to cut out of your life, since you need it to survive. Fortunately, there are many ways to save on food. Try some of the following tips.

1. Eat at home. Ingredients are usually less than prepared meals. The next time you are out and are tempted to stop for dinner on the way home, stop at the grocery store instead. Some inexpensive but quick ideas include hamburgers, hot dogs, lunch meat, stir fry ingredients and chicken.

2. Work those coupons. Get the Sunday inserts every week and combine them with the sales at your local store. Sign up for manufacturer coupons and take advantage of printable coupons. Savvy couponers can save 50 percent off of their food bill.

3. Stretch the meat. Meat can be one of the more expensive items on the grocery list. You can stretch this in a number of ways. Substitute some of the meat meals in your week with meals made with beans, tofu or even eggs for protein. Stretch meatloaf with stuffing mix.

4. Take advantage of seasonal sales. Blueberries and strawberries are cheapest in early summer. Turkey goes on sale for 79 cents a pound during the Thanksgiving season. Cook to the season, and you will save money plus enjoy some fresh bargains.

5. Get freezer and storage space. Being able to stock up on bargains is one great way to save money on food. When whole chicken is buy one get one free, I’ll purchase six of them, cooking one for the week and freezing the others. Being able to double or triple your recipe and freeze the extra also means that you will have quick and inexpensive meals on hand when times are tight or when you don’t feel like cooking.
