Inspired by Dale’s review of a slow cooker cook book, I thought I would chime in with my own recommendation. I am definitely going to check out her choice, but meanwhile, let me tell you about my favorite slow cooker cook book.
This is a book that I recommend to anyone who is new at slow cooking. The recipes are simple and adaptable. My copy has plenty of post it notes inserted on the pages that give detail about the changes that I have made in order to improve a recipe to my family’s taste. And any cookbook that lends itself to adaption is okay by me.
The book I am talking about is called Fix It and Forget It, put together by Dawn J. Ranck and Phyllis Pellman Good. Now this original book became so popular that it spurred an entire series of Fix It cookbooks. I can brag that I knew it when, since it is published not far from me in Intercourse, Pa, right in the middle of Amish country. I’d enjoy getting a chance to read and review those other books, but for now, I suggest that you pick up a copy of the original.
Beside the adaptability of the recipes in this book (many of them also include variations to the main recipe) is the fact that the food produced from these recipes is very family friendly. The Macaroni and Cheese recipe on page 202 (there are two different Mac & Cheese recipes to choose from) allows me to make this kid friendly favorite easily and with using real instead of processed cheese. I also like to throw in a little browned sweet turkey sausage or chopped cherry tomatoes for extra nutrition and taste.
If you like comfort food, there are several varieties of baked beans, including a vegetarian recipe that is a family favorite here. And there are plenty of fancier takes and flavors, such as Cranberry Pot Roast, but again, this is mostly standard family dinner type fare.
If you do check it out, please tell me your thoughts on this book.
