It’s happened to me too many times — a color that looks GREAT under the bright lights at the cosmetic counter looks a lot less great when it gets home. But you don’t have to toss your shiny new purchase. Here are some quick fixes for makeup color problems.
Is your foundation too dark? Dilute it with a drop of facial moisturizer. Just add a drop of foundation and a drop of lotion and mix it in the palm of your hand. You can also just save your too-dark foundation and use it during the summer, once you’ve picked up some color.
Using a facial moisturizer beneath your foundation is a good idea anyway — during the dry winter months, your skin needs the extra hydration.
Is your lipstick too dark? Look for a neutral beige lipstick. Apply the too-dark color first, then layer the neutral over top until you’ve got a color you can live with. Some cosmetics lines make neutralizers — I have one from Mary Kay that I simply adore. It’s got a hint of shimmer in it, so the neutralizer can be worn solo, too.
Is your lipstick too blah? Add a layer of shimmery lip gloss over a dull shade to perk it up. Lip liner can help perk up a boring lipstick color, if you like using liner. Personally, I’m not a fan; I like my makeup to be quick and easy.
Want to darken your eye shadow? Try wetting your brush first. Cosmetic guru Bobbi Brown offers that tip for intensifying colors. If that isn’t enough, try layers of color. Use a bolder shade first, then a lighter shade over top. If your eye shadow color is too much, you can layer over a neutral shade that’s closer to your natural skin tone. That will help tone things down but still give you a hint of the color you loved at the store.
