Now that you have been taking some great digital photos, you’ll want to share them right? When you are done uploading them to your My Site here at Families.com, you might want a way to manage them and share them some more. Flickr is one of the many growing photo sharing websites that makes it easy to upload, organize and share digital photos.
The basic premise of a photo sharing site such as Flickr is to give users a place to store digital photos. When you want to share a digital photo or group of photos, instead of the traditional way of e-mailing a file out to everyone, you can simply direct them to your account on the photo sharing site.
There are several things you can do on Flickr, and yes, signing up with a basic account is free. You can upload your photos, organize them, share them, use a map feature, make things out of your photos and get automatic updates from your contacts.
Here are some more details about these features.
Upload: You can upload your photos using software that is downloadable from the site and compatible with both PC and Mac. Or you upload your photos using other software plugins, such as ones for iPhoto or Aperture. Finally, you can also upload photos by visiting the website directly, or by sending an e-mail.
Organize: Flickr has some nice organizing features. You can organize your photos into sets (themes) or collections (groups of sets). You can tag your photos or set permissions.
Share: You can share photos by setting up groups that can be either public or private. There is a nice little discussion board that goes with the whole thing. You can set privacy features and safety levels for your photos.
Maps: This is a cute feature that allows you to find other photos taken in the same place. So, if you want to see how your botanical garden photos hold up against other photographers taking the same shots, this is a way to do it.
Make Stuff: Create photo books, calendar and even stamps with your photos. You can also give others permission to make stuff with your photos.
Contact Updates: You can designate contacts and friends or family and keep up with what everyone is doing. There is also a guest pass feature that allows anyone to access your photos, even if they don’t have a Flikr account.
