Florida Toddler Shoots Self

Many years ago my dad gave my mom a shooting lesson at a nearby firing range. My mom enjoyed the lesson. Because Mom’s lesson went so well, Dad gave a lesson to each of his three daughters. I told my dad outright that I wasn’t going to take the lesson. I gave my gift certificate to Mom.

I am not anti-gun. I want everyone who wants to arm himself to be able to do so. However, I’m completely against owning a gun. I have proven unable to hold scissors or knives without ending up bleeding. I most always burn myself while cooking. The last thing I need is a weapon of a gun’s magnitude in my hands.

Texas embraces Castle Law. I’m heartily in favor of it. We could use deadly force to protect our home, our property, and ourselves. It’s been suggested to me on more than one occasion that I should carry a handgun to protect myself. I don’t think so.

Not only am I worried about my own safety around a gun and being able to protect myself, but I’m a foster parent. I cannot have an unlocked loaded gun. As it should be when we’re caring for other people’s children. As it should be when we’re caring for our own children.

Apparently a friend of a Tallahassee, Florida, mother forgot all the basics of gun safety when he paid the family a visit. The friend is a security guard. After he removed his loaded weapon, he laid it on the bed and went to the bathroom. As soon as his back was turned the mother’s two-year-old son discovered the gun and shot himself.

This toddler was lucky. His self-inflicted wound was not severe and he’s expected to make a full recovery. What a relief! All too often these accidents end in tragedy.

It is our right to own guns. However, owning a gun carries tremendous responsibility. Children are curious. Toddlers are exploring everything around them. Please exercise caution if you own a gun or if you allow one to come into your home.
