Before you start to get organized, take a good look around at our stuff and start asking questions!
When you ask questions of your stuff, it quickly becomes clear to you what needs to be done in order to put your home into a better organized state with fewer clutter. Clutter busting doesn’t mean that you have to get rid of all of your stuff, although paring down is usually a good idea. Rather it means having a place for everything that you love or need, and having systems set up to keep everything where it belongs.
Start Big and Go Small
First start big by taking a look at your home. What are the biggest issues in your home? Is it that dinner doesn’t get done on time? Are you always late because no one can ever find their shoes? Do you constantly have fines on your library books or late fees on your bills?
These questions will help you identify the room or area of your home that would give you the biggest bang for your clutter busting buck. Start there.
Once you know the room, then it is time to go small. Pick one area, be it a corner of the room or even just a drawer.
Question Your Stuff
Some questions that you can ask to help you focus your organization efforts include:
What is the purpose of this room, area, drawer, closet, space, etc? What would you like it to be?
When I look at it, what objects just don’t work? What belongs and what doesn’t?
How can I make better use of this space? Do I want to increase functionality, make it more esthetic, etc?
Why have I been keeping this object? What items do I keep tucking in the back and never using or wearing?
Does this item make sense where it is? Does it make sense at all?
As you answer these questions to yourself, it should help you determine your basic organization strategy and where to begin.
