Focus on Teaching Your Children the Gospel

One of the greatest responsibilities that we have parents is to teach our children the gospel. We need to work every day to teach our children the commandments as well as the Plan of Salvation. Teaching our children the gospel should be a daily continuous process. It is important that we give our children the strength to withstand the negative influences in the world.

Family home evening every week is an excellent way to address specific gospel principles. It is a chance to talk about the gospel in depth with your children. Family scripture study also gives you this opportunity each day. You can use the time to teach your children how to apply the scriptures to their lives. It is important to think of taking scripture study a step farther than just reading the scriptures. Asking the questions of what does this teach us or how does this apply to our lives now, will give your children an opportunity to analyze and apply the scriptures to their lives.

Just as important it is important to show your children how to live the gospel. Your children should learn how to live the gospel through your example. It is important to work on focusing on the positive. You should also demonstrate the habits that you want your children to embrace. Seeing you practice daily personal scripture study and prayer can make a big difference in whether or not your children pick up this habit in their lives.

Establishing a peaceful and happy home can also help your children learn the gospel and combat the negative influences of the world. Ultimately we want our homes to be a place that our children want to be. A home needs to be a place where they feel safe and loved. It is important for us to teach our children to treat each other with respect and kindness. We should never belittle our children or allow others to do the same.

As we strive to do these things our homes and our families will be pointed towards Christ. This will help our children to fully understand the Plan of Salvation. As they do this they can fully partake of the blessings of the gospel in their lives.
