This blog is part of a series that focuses on the candidates who are running for President of the United States in the 2016 election. This blog focuses on Donald Trump.
According to his official website, Donald J. Trump is a graduate of Wharton School of Finance. He is the author a popular business book called The Art of the Deal. You might recognize his name from Trump Tower, the Trump International Hotel, or his “Celebrity Apprentice” TV series.
Unlike the other Republican candidates, Donald Trump does not have any background in politics. He has never held an elected position. He does, however, have a lot of business experience.
Health Care
CNN reports that Donald Trump wants to repeal Obamacare (also known as ACA or the Affordable Care Act) and “replace it with something terrific”. He wants that “terrific” thing to be handled by private insurance companies who are competing in the private market.
In addition, Donald Trump has expressed interest in an alternative system for lower-income individuals. He told CNN “I want to try and help those people.” His official website says: “We must protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid without cuts…there will no longer be any waste, fraud, and abuse on my watch.”
Women’s Health Care
ThinkProgress points toward an interview that Donald Trump had with Fox News Host Sean Hannity, in which Trump was asked about Planned Parenthood. Donald Trump interrupted the question and said “They do good things.”
Trump also stated: “Let’s say there’s two Planned Parenthoods in a way. You have it as an abortion clinic. Now, that’s actually a fairly small part of what they do, but it’s a brutal part and I’m totally against it and I wouldn’t do that. They also, however service women.”
Immigration
On his official website, Donald Trump states that he wants to build a wall across the border of the United States and Mexico. He intends to make Mexico pay for that wall. He also wants to increase penalties for immigrants that overstay their visas, and wants a “mandatory return of all criminal aliens”.
Jobs
Interestingly, some of Donald Trump’s immigration plan includes changes to the H-1B program. It is a program that enables companies to hire foreign workers for STEM jobs “at the lowest possible wage level”. Donald Trump wants to increase the wage that those workers are paid. In addition, he wants to require American companies to “hire American workers first”.
Education
On his official website, Donald Trump says: “We have to stop Common Core. We must keep education local and under parental control. Unelected Washington bureaucrats shouldn’t determine what is best for our children.”
