Focus on the Candidates – John Kasich

Focus on the Candidates John Kasich Find more family blogs at Families.comThis blog is part of the series that focuses on the candidates who are running for President of the United States in 2016. This blog focuses on John Kasich.

John Kasich is the 69th Governor of Ohio. He was first elected to that position in 2010, and he won re-election in 2014.

Health Care
According to his official website, John Kasich believes that “Obamacare” must be repealed and replaced. He wants to replace it with what he calls “A New, Conservative Vision”.

That vision includes “having a primary care system that helps promote long term good health instead of just reacting when someone gets sick”. He also wants to move from paying each health care provider separately to making them work as a team to lower costs.

Women’s Health Care
According to his official website, John Kasich wants to defund Planned Parenthood. He wants to prevent “taxpayer funding” (such as Medicaid and Title X) from going to Planned Parenthood. Doing so prevents women (and men) who use Medicaid from accessing cancer screenings, STD/STI testing and treatment, pap smears, well woman checkups, and access to affordable contraception from the nation’s largest provider of women’s health care.

In addition, John Kasich wants to give “taxpayer funding” to rape crisis centers. What he doesn’t say is that some of those centers do not have medically trained staff, and that some are run by organizations that are against access to abortion and contraception.

He also wants to create a $500,000-per-year Parenting and Pregnancy support program “that provides counseling to pregnant women, meets practical needs of new mothers such as cribs and formula, and connects new mothers to additional help”.

Immigration
Immigration is not mentioned on his official website. Newsweek reported that John Kasich wants to build a wall on the U.S. – Mexico border. He also has stated that he does not want to end birthright citizenship. Newsweek quotes John Kasich as saying “If you’re born here, you’re a citizen. Period. End of story.”

Education
According to his official website, John Kasich believes that education “should not be micro-managed by the federal government”. He wants local districts to be able to use whatever textbooks they choose.

He is in favor of vouchers to expand school choice, and wants to encourage high school students to earn college credit while completing their high school courses. It appears that as Governor he has frozen the cost of college tuition and fees while an Ohio state tax-force works on a plan to lower costs.

Jobs
According to his official website, John Kasich is, as Governor of Ohio, phasing out income taxes for small businesses. He also created the “Common Sense Initiative” which acts as as “one-stop shop” for the regulations that the state imposes upon businesses.
