Sometimes it is the little things that can help you save money, sometimes without you really realizing it. Taking care of items can help them to last longer, of course, but did you know that folding certain items of clothing can actually keep them looking good and extend their life? So throw those hangers away, or at least save them for certain items while you fold others.
There are two ways that folding clothing can extend its life. The first is that it puts less pressure on the clothing fibers than does hanging. You can easily stretch out a top by storing it on a hanger, for example.
Folding also helps keep these items wrinkle free. You’ll want to fold them straight from the dryer as soon as possible. If you leave them sit in the dryer, your clothes will wrinkle and require ironing, which uses energy and affects the life span of your clothes. Also, leaving the items in the dryer past the drying time can make your items shrink, even if the dryer is off. This is because once the moisture is sucked out, your clothes are more vulnerable to any heat that is left behind in the dryer.
Another reason to fold clothing right away and then put it away is that it makes it less likely that it will need to be rewashed. Clothing that is tossed here and there, or that falls off of hangers in the closet tend to get tossed in the wash, even if these items have never been worn. Not only does this give you extra work, but more frequent washing also wears out your clothing more quickly.
There are three specific types of clothing that can benefit most from folding: shirts and sweaters. These items will last much longer when they are folded, because of the way tops are designed. I also like to keep jeans folded so they don’t get a worn line on the legs from rubbing on a hanger. Plus I have always thought there was something weird about jeans that were hung. It is just one of my idiosyncrasies, I guess!
