Fold3 Gives Free Access to Black History Collection

folded flag In the United States, February is Black History Month. This is the perfect month for genealogists to learn how to do research that will help them to learn more about their African-American ancestors. Fold3 is offering genealogists free access to their entire Black History record collection, for the whole month of February.

Black History Month is a good time for genealogists to take a class, or attend a workshop, that teaches people the researching techniques that are required in order to find information about one’s African-American ancestors. Part of the difficulty with this type of genealogy is that the records can be especially elusive.

You do not necessarily have to be African-American in order to learn how to do this type of genealogy research. Perhaps your family tree includes ancestors who were from a variety of cultures and countries. You might need these skills in order to do your family history research. Or, maybe you are interested in becoming a professional genealogist who helps people of all backgrounds learn more about their family tree.

Fold3 is a genealogy website that can provide you with convenient access to United States military records. In addition to the records, the website also has photos, personal documents, and the stories of the men and women who served. Genealogists can use Fold3 to learn more about the lives of your relatives and ancestors who were in the military. The name of this website refers to the way that the United States flag is folded at the funerals of members of the military.

Users of the website can combine the records that they found on Fold3 with their other, offline, genealogy research. You can create an online memorial on the Fold3 website for your ancestor or relative that served his or her country. You can upload your own, personal, photos of that relative.

Right now, and for the whole month of February, Fold3 is giving free access to its collection of Black History records. This includes their “Colored Troop” Service Records, Court slave records, slave registry, and Anti-slavery records. You can view more than one million photos and documents that cannot be found anywhere else on the internet, except for at Fold3.

You do not have to be a member of Fold3 in order to enjoy free access to their Black History records this month. Do you think you might want to become a member of Fold3? They offer a seven day free trial, that gives you access to everything that can be found through their website. Once that trial ends, you can choose to have a free membership, (but it will limit your access to their records). Membership costs $11.95 per month.
