Sometimes we don’t see what is staring us right in the face. We may need to listen to the wisdom and counsel of others who are older and wiser, Proverbs 5:1. How carefully do we listen to those who have wisdom and insight? Proverbs 5:13. On the other hand, when we have experience and wisdom in a certain problem or situation, do we share that wisdom with others, so they may benefit from what we have learned?
The trouble is even those with wisdom may not be right in every case, so how do we know where to turn? We go back to the counsel that is always right. The counsel that never fails and will always guide us. That wisdom is found in God and in reading his world. The bible tells us in several places, the fear of the Lord brings wisdom, Job 28:28, Proverbs 1:7, 9:10. So God should be our first port of call.
Nowhere is wisdom more important that in the areas of marriage and faithfulness. In today’s world, infidelity and promiscuity confront us from our TV screens and movies, from newspapers, books, music and from just about every aspect of life. Even the church is not immune. We have all heard scandals of church leaders and members who have been unfaithful and acted against God’s direct word.
Those of us more mature in Christian faith need to be teaching our young people the importance of standing against what the world teaches by remaining pure before marriage and faithful in it.
God’s plan is for one man and one woman Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:5-6. Such is the importance Jesus places on this, that unfaithfulness that is the only reason Jesus allows for divorce, because it tears at the fabric of a marriage, Matthew 19:9. In Proverbs 5:3 the writer speaks against adultery and highlights its consequences, verses 4-14.
Instead, the writer urges faithfulness, verses 15-19. Throughout the bible God stresses the importance sets on marriage and faithfulness. It is indeed folly to go against the express commands, wisdom and insight of the Lord God Almighty. Let us remember it and obey it ourselves and teach it to our young people.
