My husband and I are once again contemplating getting rid of our cable television service. The cost for the service seems to be getting out of control. And when you add in all that we pay for connectivity, be it for cable television or Internet, the cost per month is more than I used to pay for rent!
While talking about it, the two of us and our oldest son discussed whether or not we would miss cable television. “We never really watch it,” our son said shrugging. “Well, except for the Food Network.”
I never thought that I would be interested in watching other people cook, but today’s food-centered shows are a far cry from the old Julia Child type of cooking show. There is more drama and comedy than you can get from a drunk chicken. An added bonus? The commercials in between the breaks in these shows are always family friendly.
Out of all of the shows out there, these are our favorite ones.
Good Eats
Alton Brown is the guy who first got us watching anything to do with food on television. His combination of good food and the science behind it is addicting, and Alton himself is very funny and entertaining. He really breaks down the steps to making a perfect whatever and his recipes have been fail proof in our household. New characters keep the kids entertained, and who knew that you could make your own candy corn?
Unwrapped
Mark Summers brings us my son’s favorite Food Network Show. It shows us all of the behind the scenes nitty gritty of how America’s favorite food was born and is made. Where else can you find out where wax lips came from or how peanut butter is blended?
Food Network Challenge
From sugar masterpieces to haunted gingerbread houses, viewers can hold their breath at the wonderful creations that come to live in food as teams compete for the ultimate prize. Will the tower of sweets inspired by Cirque du Soleil come crashing down? We can vote for our favorite creations and see if the judges agree. There is a nice mix of different competitions, from amateur cake birthday cake bakers to the World Pastry Team championships.
