Food Storage: Five Miscellaneous Items to Store

Once you have covered most of the major food groups you will want to make sure that you include additional items in your food storage to round out the basics. You should plan to store enough to last you for a year. Most of these items are fairly easy to rotate throughout the year.

1) You will want to make sure that you include powdered milk in your food storage. You can use powdered milk in baking and cooking recipes. It can add nutrients to the foods you already make. If you do not plan on drinking powdered milk, you should plan on saving money so that you can continue to purchase powdered milk. You may also want to consider purchasing sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk as well.

2) Another item that you should consider storing is cooking oil. You will want to store the types of oil that your family uses. Canola oil and olive oil are considered healthier than vegetable oil. You may also want to consider storing a supply of butter and shortening for baking. Oil does become rancid, so you should store just enough to last a year, and make sure that you rotate through your supply on a regular basis.

3) You should also include sugar and honey in your food storage. You will use these items in baking, plus they may make oatmeal and cereal more appetizing to your family. You should determine how much sugar your family will need and store it accordingly. You should consider storing white sugar, brown sugar and powdered sugar as well.

4) Another important item to remember to store is leavening agents. You should store yeast, as well as baking powder, and baking soda. These items are essential if you plan on doing any baking. You will need to make sure that you rotate them as well, because they do not work as well when they become old.

5) Salt is another essential item to include in your food storage. The recommended amount is eight pounds per person per year. It is important to include salt because your body does need it in moderation.

You may also want to consider storing easy baking mixes for birthday cakes, and other special occasions. Powdered eggs might be a good addition as well. It is important to remember the items you would need to make the mixes as well.
