Have you considered including holiday items in food storage? These items would most likely fit under comfort foods. However, it would be nice to have these foods available, especially if you are struggling financially. This can alleviate your worries, and free up some money for other expenses. Here are five items that you should consider including”
1) You should consider storing pie fillings. This can include canned pumpkin. You can also can homemade apple pie filling as well. If you like chocolate pies or cream pies, you should consider storing the pudding needed to make these pies. Crusts are fairly easy to make, and you should have all the ingredients for piecrusts in your basic food storage already.
2) You may consider storing hot chocolate packets. If you prefer homemade hot chocolate, then you may want to store cocoa powder and the other ingredients that you need for these items. You may also want to consider storing hot apple cider and cinnamon sticks as well.
3) You may want to consider storing the little extras that are included with Thanksgiving dinner. This could include canned yams or sweet potatoes. You may also consider storing cranberry sauce, and olives.
4) Another item you may consider storing is nuts. Nuts are often required in baking around the holidays, plus they are an excellent source of nutrients and good fat. You should consider storing the ones that you use most in baking.
5) Finally you should set additional money aside in your food storage category, so that you can afford to buy a turkey or a ham for the big dinners. If you cannot afford these you may consider buying a chicken or two (which are often cheaper) or a canned ham (if your family will eat it) as alternatives.
