We have been counseled to get food storage. The church has counseled us for years to get our year’s supply, emergency kit and recently our three month’s supply of food together. We have witnessed recently natural disasters around the world that have caused the cost of basic food staples to rise. It is important to realize that the counsel needs to be followed. So what is stopping you from doing it now?
One common excuse is that you don’t have enough money to purchase a year’s supply of food. You do not need to purchase a whole year’s supply all at once. You can purchase an extra can or two a week, and at least you will begin your supply. You may need to forgo unnecessary expenses (such as movies out or a new television set) in order to purchase food, but you should be able to find some money to do it.
Another common excuse is that you don’t have room to store your food. If you look around your home or apartment, you ought to be able to find places to store your food. Be creative. You can use the space under your bed or couch. You can put it in a corner, or build or buy a shelf to store it in. You can find room for at least a three month supply of food in even the smallest apartments if you are creative.
Another excuse is that I will never use the food, and I refuse to buy food that I’m not going to eat. (This is common among older people who have stored food, and then moved to a smaller place and ended up throwing much of their food away because it has expired.) If you store just three months, and it is food you regularly eat, then you can rotate through it each month. Then store foods that don’t go bad, such as wheat and beans to extend the shelf life of much of your food storage.
