Football Fun for Kids

It’s down to the final four in the NFL. The Jets, Colts, Vikings and Saints go head-to-head this weekend to see who will duke it out in Super Bowl XLIV. It’s great news for rabid football fans, but what about the kids of fanatical football fans?

At most football viewing parties the kiddos are relegated to the basement while the adults whoop it up in front of the big screen. This year why not try something a little different and get the kids involved in the party? Believe it or not there are fun ways to include kids in game day party activities. Take a look at just a few ideas:

DECORATIONS

Line your buffet table with white art craft or butcher paper. Then, let the kids color it green with markers or crayons. Next, use white medical tape to create the gridiron. If you don’t want to use butcher paper, you could simply purchase a green tablecloth and add the tape to create yard lines. To finish off the table, get the kids to help you blow up balloons and hang streamers in your favorite team’s colors. Kids can also make posters to hang on the front door and windows. Use brown construction paper and cut out football shapes and decorate them to look like real balls. Use the paper footballs to decorate the table or hang from the ceiling.

SNACKS

To keep kids busy during the game have them decorate football-themed cookies or cupcakes. Make or buy a few dozen football shaped sugar cookies and let the kids decorate them with frosting, gel, sprinkles and candy in your favorite team’s color. You can do the same for cupcakes.

GAMES

Set up an area in the house where the kids can play their own football-themed games when they get bored watching the real game on TV. Some ideas include:

Obstacle Course: Create a kid-friendly obstacle course using items you already have around the house, such as: Pillows, jump ropes, boxes, chairs, plastic tables, hula hoops, mini orange safety cones, etc. Kids can race against the clock and the winner can score a Nerf football.

Balloon Football: Use a brown balloon to represent a football. During the commercials have the kids try to keep the balloon ball off the ground while tapping it to their teammates.

Face Painting: Purchase a few face paint kits and let the kids go to town creating masterpieces on each other’s mugs.

Pinata: Make or buy a football shaped pinata and fill it with game day goodies, such as football stickers, football shaped erasers, pencils, and football shaped chocolates.
