For the Strength of Youth Series: Family

The opening statement in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet on Family states that “being part of a family is a great blessing.” Some of the benefits listed for being part of a family include companionship and happiness, a loving atmosphere, and a place of preparation for eternal life.

Family is one of my most amazing blessings in life. I am amazed at how much I have learned and continue to learn from my family. I have four sisters and two brothers along with fabulous parents who have all taught me valuable lessons throughout the years. And they’ve become some of my closest friends. This has happened since respect and love were emphasized in our home and in our relationships with each other all growing up. And I am so appreciative to my parents for reinforcing those values at home.

Families look and function differently—some with single parents, some with no children, and some with lots. But no matter what your family looks like, it can provide the same structure and loving environment if all the members of a family take part in making the family sacred as it should be.

The pamphlet encourages every member of a family to do their part and seek peace in the home. This includes serving one another and doing what needs to be done (like chores) even if you haven’t been asked to help.

Honoring your parents is another important aspect of building family relationships outlined in the pamphlet. This was one of the Ten Commandments the Lord gave to Moses and the children of Israel, and it’s an amazing way to make your home life happier. Even though I don’t live with my parents anymore, I am in awe of all they know and have taught me. They’re even smarter now than when I was a youth!

By holding family home evening, scripture study, family prayer, and eating dinner together, our families can become stronger, more able to resist temptations, and a beautiful blessing in our lives.
