Forever 27: The Others

So we know that Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain all died tragically at the age of 27. But there are more members of the infamous club who never reached the superstardom of the ones I have already mentioned. Here is a list of the other musicians who died at the age of 27:

Louis Chauvin
Chauvin was a ragtime musician who died in 1908 of syphilis.

Jesse Belvin
Belvin was an R&B singer/songwriter who died in a car accident in 1960. His biggest hit was “Goodnight My Love,” which reached #7 on the R&B charts and was the closing theme to DJ Alan Freed’s rock and roll radio show.

Johnny Kidd

Johnny was the singer/songwriter for the band Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. Their biggest hit was “Shaking All Over” which was eventually covered by The Who and the Guess Who. Kidd died in a car accident in 1966.

Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson

Wilson was the lead singer of the band Canned Heat, which had the hits “On The Road Again”, “Goin’ Up The Country”, “Let’s Work Together”, “Amphetamine Annie” and “Refried Boogie.” Wilson died of a barbiturate overdose in 1970.

Ron “Pigpen” McKernan
McKernan was a founding member of the band the Grateful Dead. He died of gastrointestinal hemorrhaging due to alcoholism in 1973.

Dave Alexander
Alexander was the bassist for the Stooges, which featured lead singer Iggy Pop. He died of pneumonia in 1975.

Peter Ham

The keyboardist/guitarist of Badfinger, Ham hung himself in 1975.

Gary Thain

Thain was at one time the bassist for Uriah Heep. He died of a herion overdose in 1975.

Chris Bell

Bell was the singer/songwriter for Big Star (“September Gurls” and “Back of a Car”). He died in a car crash in 1978.

D. Boon
The guitarist of the punk band the Minutemen, Boon died in a car accident in 1985.

Mia Zapata
Mia was the lead singer for the punk band The Gits. She was murdered in July 1993. Her murder was featured on “Unsolved Mysteries,” “American Justice,” “City Confidential,” and “48 Hours.” The murder was eventually solved and the perpetrator was sentenced to 36 years in prison in 2004.

Kristen Pfaff
Kristen was a bassist for the band Hole, lead by Kurt Cobain’s wife Courtney Love. She died of a heroin overdose in 1994.

Kami
Kami was the drummer for the Japanese rock band Malice Mizer. He died of subarachnoid hemorrhage in 1999.

And there you have it, all the musicians that have died at the age of 27…so far.
