Foster & Adoptive Parents Support Groups – Part 3

The Foster and Adoptive Parents support group that my husband and I belong to is the Foster and Adoptive Parents of Collin County. The group meets the second Tuesday of the month at 6:00 PM for dinner and fellowship and then training starts at 6:30. We get two continuing education training hours at each meeting. The meetings are meant to be a family time with an easy start time and dinner. Many of the parents come prepared with their children in their jammies so they can leave the meeting at 8:30 and go straight to bed when they get home. I am never that prepared.

I don’t remember when I started attending the meetings of the Foster and Adoptive Parents group. I remember feeling so relieved that I’d finally found them. What wonderful people they all were. This is what I needed. I didn’t need MOMS Club. I needed other parents who understood exactly what it was like to be a foster mom. I needed to be with other parents to commiserate about losing children we’ve fallen in love with. When I started going the meetings started at 7:00 and ended at 9:00 with no dinner. Question and answer time as well as time for general chat were included in the meeting.

The group would do family activities throughout the year. Unfortunately, because I had such young children, I never went to the activities. I wish I had so I could have gotten closer to the members. Even with babies, I’m sure I would have had fun. I’m the mom who was so desperate for other mom friends. I’m the mom who was so desperate for help with darling toddler, Gemini. I had the support group and didn’t use everything it had to offer. I wonder what I was afraid of.
