It has been shown time and time again that it takes more than a school to highly educate a child. The best education that a child can receive will be a dual relationship between school and home. Those children who are flourishing in academics are receiving positive reinforcement in all areas of their environment.
My last article discussed how at one point in time researchers felt that a child’s intellect is a born trait. However studies have shown that a child’s intellect can be enhanced by a positive and nurturing environment.
Many studies will group children based on their home’s income level and parents’ degree of education. In most cases children living within environments of lower income and lower levels of education score lower on standardized tests.
Children living in families of higher income often receive more stimulating play and experiences because their parents can afford to give it to them. While money may play a role, it is not a determining factor in a child’s success. We have many successful individuals from both ends of the income spectrum.
The key factors in determining a child’s intellect comes from deeper than money can buy. These factors include a moderate level of stimulation, loving and attentive caregivers, a consistent daily routine, and an environment that is rich in language and exploration.
Children who receive exposure to various environments also tend to do better academically. Offering your child different levels of the world can enhance many learning abilities. Give your child the opportunity to explore unfamiliar grounds. Even small infants should not be confined to the home. They can gain much from new sounds and lights.
Molding your child into an intellectual well-rounded person may seem like a scary job. However it can be a very fun and exciting experience.
