Fourth Grade Language Arts Part 2

Fourth Grade language arts skills builds upon skills learned in previous years. Here is part 2 of the list of fourth grade language arts skills adapted from the World book website along with my suggestions for teaching these skills.

Reading: A child’s reading materials must be varied and include short stories, chapter books, poetry, plays.

Spelling:
There are numerous workbooks and online references you can use for fourth grade spelling exercises as well as a list of words a fourth grader should know. My children loved using the Leapfrog Turbo game to practice spelling words during car trips.

Increasing dictionary skills:
Students should be able to look up words in the dictionary to help them find the correct spelling and to define the word. This is highly recommended as an exercise to do with weekly spelling lists.

Cursive handwriting: A student should be able to legibly write in script by the fourth grade.

Simple outlining: Students should be able to write an outline of a story in order to prepare to write a book report or essay.

Writing letters and informal notes: Students must be able to write letters to friends as well as letters written to persuade, or thank others.
Written and oral book reports: Students must be able to write book reports and to present them aloud.

Creative writing:
Students need to be able to write creative stories using good grammar rules.
Developing skills in locating information: Students must be able to research information, in books, encyclopedias, magazines, and on the internet.

Increasing indexing skills:
Students must be able to find a page in a book using the index to locate it. They must also be able to find a book in the library using the catalog system.

Utilizing parts of a newspaper:
Students must be able to read the newspaper for information and to report on current events.
