Fourth of July Family Fun

When planning your family celebration for Fourth of July, do not forget to check with your local Chamber of Commerce for low cost and even free family activities. Find out if there is a parade that isn’t too far away and ask about free concerts in the park or hosted contests with prizes planned for that day. Some companies offer contests as promotions.

Many fireworks displays are offered free of charge or for a small donation. In some locations events begin on July 3rd, so be sure to find out what’s going on in advance.

If you plan to go to a public beach, be aware that it will likely be crowded. The private beaches that charge admission may not be as crowded, and some offer discounts on holidays. Check to see if you can pay one rate per carload instead of paying per person.
Also, ask about events at forest preserves, state parks, and national parks, as there are often special activities available.

If there isn’t much happening around your house, make your own fun. Pick up an inexpensive horseshoe set for kids. The one at Dollar General Store is sturdy, hard plastic and only costs $2.00. Other dollar stores may have similar offerings. Big kids, little kids, and even adults will enjoy a little friendly competition. You can also find outdoor packs that include horseshoes, yard darts, and a Frisbee for about 5-6 dollars.

Pick up some bubbles or have a few relay races. Turn on your stereo and get everyone up and dancing (don’t turn it up too loud!). Don’t be afraid to let loose and be silly. Serve some great food or snacks. Sometimes big plans aren’t what they’re cracked up to be. Sometimes it’s more fun to keep things simple and just relax and enjoy time with your family and friends.
