Who says you need to spend a bundle to have some holiday family fun?
The economy is tanking and managers of Indianapolis-area attractions are responding by offering fabulous freebies during the 12 days leading up to Christmas. In what is being dubbed the “12 Free Days Of Indy Christmas” celebration, visitors will be gifted with free admission and other goodies at participating attractions.
For example, on Saturday, December 13th, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum will be offering free admission to its collection of trophies and cars. On Sunday, December 14th, you can tour the President Benjamin Harrison Home for free. The 1875 Italianate mansion is decked in holiday regalia, including a 10-foot Christmas tree, similar to the one the Harrisons had at the White House.
On December 15th you can get a free wine glass to take home if you drop in to sample wines at any one of seven participating wineries on the Indy Wine Trail. On December 16th, the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home is giving visitors the chance to see the poet’s home dressed up for the holidays—-free of charge. Then, on December 17th, you can tour the Morris-Butler House (an 1865 landmark) during its Victorian Christmas celebration, without shelling out a single dime.
On December 18th, the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the historic Lilly House are both offering free admission, and on December 19th, the Indiana Historical Society is giving visitors a free look at a “Holidays in the Heartland” display.
The eighth free day, includes free admission to the Indiana Medical History Museum, home of “the nation’s oldest surviving pathology laboratory.” On December 21st you can check out the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art for free, and on December 22nd kids can take a ride on the “Santa Claus Express” train for free at the Indiana State Museum.
On the eleventh free day Indianapolis restaurants join the promotion by offering free desserts with purchase of an entree at participating restaurants including The Skyline Club, The Claddagh and Champions at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown among others.
Finally, on the 12th day of Christmas (December 24th), The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis offers free admission and free parking to visit Santa, a snow castle, a Yule Slide and other attractions such as Santa’s house. If your little one is too shy to sit on Santa’s lap he or she can peer in the windows of St. Nick’s imaginary town or ride the kid-sized train around a small track.
