Free Pumpkins

Now is the time to stock up on free pumpkins. You’ll find a lot of them available right now, if you know where to look.

Right now, retailers are trying to get rid of their pumpkins. This is because it was a good crop this year, and the supply outpaced the demand for pumpkins in October. You can take advantage of this fact to snag lots of free pumpkins.

Why would you want all of these free pumpkins? Well, just think of them as pounds and pounds of free food that can be made into everything from soups to pies. An added benefit is that pumpkin freezes very well, so you can gut the pumpkins and store them to use for the next six months. And I am told, thanks to some loyal readers, that carving pumpkins make tasty meals and deserts.

So where can you find all of these pumpkins? Here in Pennsylvania, I have spotted them in many places. Believe it or not, most superstores and grocery stores are trying to get rid of them. Walmart had a big cardboard bin of them marked at $0.00. The local grocery superstore had the pumpkins for a penny a piece. Okay, that isn’t free, but I am guessing that they have to charge a penny to help with their inventory. Our local farm stand is offering as many free pumpkins as you can carry. And while they won’t let you fill a truck, they will let every member of your family carry as much as they can.

You can also check with your neighbors about their pumpkins. Many have ones that they bought for decoration. One neighbor of ours likes to grow pumpkins every year. After Halloween, he gives them all away.

If you need even more ideas, other than food, for leftover pumpkins, you can check out my earlier article, Ten Ways to Use Leftover Pumpkins.
