Free Storage Buckets

Storage buckets are useful for so many things, from pet food to potting soil. Here is how you can get all of the large storage buckets you like, for free!

I have written earlier about our adventures with feeding the birds here outside of our window (If you missed it, you can read about Frugal Bird Feeding and Creating A Bird Book to learn more). We finally broke down, this past weekend, and bought a 50 pound bag of sunflower seeds for our very hungry friends. It is definitely a lot of seed, but buying it in bulk at a local feed store definitely saved us some money.

At the moment, the seed is stored in the garage, and I am very worried about it for two reasons. One, it might get damp and moldy in the garage. Or at the very least, it might get soggy and become a mess. Two, small animals might decide that the free food would make the garage an especially nice place to live. I wouldn’t want a family of mice, for example, think our garage was the location of a free buffet.

We also have some bagged pine cat litter to store, as well as some recycling. All of these things would really benefit from having air tight storage containers, complete with lids.

One great place to get large storage buckets for free is at your grocery store. Just go to the bakery section and ask them if you could have their empty frosting buckets and lids. The bakery folks will be more than happy to give them to you. You’ll need to wash them out when you get home. Remove the old labels, and then make your own new labels, or use a permanent magic marker to write on the buckets, so you know what you have stored inside.
