French Union on American Soil

Well, that didn’t take long…

Her ex-husband may have beat her to the altar, but France’s former first lady, Cécilia Ciganer-Albéniz was not far behind.

The 50-year-old mother divorced current French president Nicolas Sarkozy last October after more than a decade of marriage. He went on to marry former supermodel Carla Bruni last month. Now Ciganer-Albéniz has just tied the knot with her Moroccan-born public relations executive Richard Attias in New York.

According to reports, Ciganer-Albeniz and Attias, 48 left Paris last week, flew to Manhattan to get ready for their nuptials and have now settled at Attias’s Greenwich, Connecticut home.

The couple spent Friday hosting a rehearsal dinner of sorts, then as part of the pre-wedding celebrations, the lovebirds chartered two buses and took hundreds of family members and friends to see Saturday night’s performance of Mamma Mia! at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway.

According to witnesses, during the musical the couple sat in the center of the theater surrounded by friends and even got recognized by cast member Andy Kelso who congratulated the pair during a curtain call.

Today, the couple wed in a civil ceremony before 148 guests and they are likely still partying at their Rockefeller Center reception right now.

According to PEOPLE magazine, both the bride and groom were expected to don specially designed formalwear by Versace.

Among the expected guests reportedly on hand for the New York wedding were the couple’s children from previous marriages – including Ciganer-Albeniz’s 11-year- old son Louis, from her marriage to Sarkozy.

Are you surprised that Ciganer-Albeniz married so soon after her divorce or do you think her interest in Attias played a role in her decision to split from Sarkozy?

Much was made of Sarkozy’s “quickie” wedding to Bruni; by comparison relatively little has been made of Ciganer-Albeniz’s union with Attias. Do you think the French public is happier for one more than the other?
