There seems to have always been a duel between public and private schools as well as school in any form and home schooling. One is afraid to give in to the other. Each feels that they are serving the children better.
One major issue that I hear arise between public and private schooling is money. Most public schools feel that they should not share money with the private schools. As a public school teacher, I somewhat agree.
The private schools in my area use the public transportation school buses. I am not against the children riding the bus. However, in some terms I think that the parents chose not to use the public schools so why do they use the public transportation?
Another public school and private school debate that has risen in New York deals with funding. It seems that an overwhelming number of parents feel that the public school system should pay for their child’s tuition due to the fact that their child could not be serviced in the public school system. This is reasonable. However, some parents may not have given the public system a chance.
A case is in court now between the board of Education of New York City and Tom Freston, former Viacom CEO. Freston’s son has a learning disability and Freston chose for his son to attend a very expensive private school. It was believed that the public school system would not accommodate his child. The city has paid the $50,000 tuition for a couple of years. However, the board of education has now decided not to continue the payment.
The board of education says that the child never entered the public system to give it a chance. They claim that Freston never had any intentions of sending his son to public school. Freston’s lawyer says that the Frestons should not have had to try the school to know that it is not suitable for their son.
