Yesterday during testimony a member of the ward got up and spoke briefly about how the gospel can help to make and cement lasting friendships. His comment caused me to think back through my life and the friends that I have made. The friends that understand the sweet joy and purpose that the gospel brings into life seem to last longer. It seems as though there is no awkwardness when we get together even if it has been years since we have seen each other.
It is important to realize that the perspective that the gospel adds to our lives is one of eternity. We can see friendships as lasting forever. We understand the eternal consequences that our choices have and the importance of continually working to improve ourselves. It is amazing the sense of purpose that the gospel can bring into friendship and life.
However, I also have some excellent friends who are not members of the church. We have formed friendships based on a mutual respect of each other’s beliefs and opinions. It is wonderful to share my beliefs with these friends and to learn more about theirs. It is important to realize that we can form friendships with nearly everyone. We also should not be afraid to share the gospel because of a friendship.
I think that lasting friendship comes as a result of sharing experiences and supporting each other through difficult times. The friends that have been there when you are experiencing your most difficult moments have seen your strength and understand your weaknesses. They can lift you up and offer encouragement when it is needed most. True friends can say the most difficult things that they need to be addressed. They can listen to you and support you. They will pray with you and for you as you struggle through your trials, an in turn you will pray for them when they are experiencing trials.
Friendship can be taken for granted. It is not easy to reach out and support others. It can be especially difficult for those who are shy or who have a low self-esteem. It is important that we each try to form friendships with these people as well.
