From Crib to Bed – A Toddler’s Fun Move to a Big Kid Bed! (The Final Chapter!)

The room is complete! My three-year old daughter moved into her new, big kid room over a month ago – during the Families.com hiatus – and has been doing swimmingly! Shortly after the move she ditched her overnight Pull-Ups and is all underwear, all the time now! How exciting for her (and us!)

The room really came together nicely, and quickly. My daughter refers to it as her Paris Room. She is eager to return to the city of lights and we promised her that when her new, yet to be born, baby sister is three years old we will attempt a return trip to the other side of the pond as a foursome.

I believe that she really feels at home in the room and I would contend that her involvement in the process of selecting the wallpaper, the bed, the furniture and the decorations/accessories all lent a hand in the smooth transition.

This past weekend, we began to ready her old room, the nursery, for the pending arrival of her baby sister. Our girl really enjoyed going through all of her old baby clothes and having us remind her when she wore this or which relative bought that. It was a trip down memory lane for the Mrs. and I, and an opportunity to help prepare the “baby” room for our new bundle of joy. We are hoping for similar luck, the kind we had with the transition to the new room, when child number two arrives. We think that by involving our three year old in the cleaning, rearranging, and putting away of those tiny articles of clothing will make the arrival of another kid in the house a bit easier for her. Not that we are expecting much in the way of jealously, nothing above the normal childhood emotions. She has been nothing but excited about the pregnancy and constantly talks to and tickles her lil’ sis inside her mommy’s belly.

This experience is yet another reminder that children are capable of so much, even deciding on which wallpaper and blinds should be used in a bedroom! We as parents should never intentionally limit their ability to make decisions and to be a part of a process, regardless of how complicated or “adult” it may seem at the start.
We are incredibly pleased with our choice to give her a seat at the table during this major home remodeling project. We three are all better for it.
