“From Head To Toe” by Eric Carle is not just a picture book; it is an exercise in movement for you and your children.
Each page of the picture book features a great collage animal that does a characteristic movement for that animal. The book then asks the child if they can create the same movement. For instance, the first pages of the book show a picture of a penguin and a child. The penguin says, “I am a penguin and I can turn my head. Can you do it?” Another has a picture of a crocodile and says, “ I am a crocodile and I wriggle my hips. Can you do it?”
This is an excellent picture book for your very young children who are just starting to understand direction and their body. When you read the book together you can teach your child what different parts of their body are, and can help them learn how to follow specific directions such as “turn your neck” and “wave your arms”.
To some extent this book reminds me of a book version of twister. It’s a great book to read with your child that allows you child to direct interact with the book as you go along. This isn’t the book you want to pull out at bedtime. Chances are good after reading and interacting with this book your child will be pretty excited, so its more of a playtime book than a nap time book.
The pictures in the book are made up of painted pieces put together as a collage, which make it an interesting book to look at as well as read. You and your children are bound to enjoy this interesting book.
