Frozen Banana Malted for a Hot Summer Day

So far this year, it has not gotten so hot that it has warranted the frosty milk shake to cool off summer. But I’m sure you know exactly what type of day I’m talking about. The type of day where it’s so hot the kids don’t even want to go outside. Instead they stay lethargic, consciously attempting to conserve every last bit of energy they have.

That is the perfect type of day to make this banana malted. This is a great recipe to do with the kids but I will warn you that it is more of an art piece than an actual recipe. It requires freezing the layers separately, but I promise that when you’re done–you’ll be glad you went through the trouble.

Smashed Banana Malted

You Will Need:

1 large ripe banana

3 cups vanilla yogurt

1/3 cup chocolate syrup

2 teaspoons of instant coffee syrup (Does not have caffeine)

6 tablespoons of malted milk powder (I used Ovaltine)

Vanilla ice cream

Mash the banana on a plate with a potato masher and stick it in the freezer. (And no, it does not really work as well if you skip sticking it in the freezer.)

In a blender, combine half of the yogurt, the chocolate syrup, the instant coffee if you’re using it, 3 tablespoons of the malted milk powder and 2 scoops of ice cream. Blend the ingredients until smooth. Add three more scoops of ice cream and blend again, until smooth. You have just made the first layer of your drink! Place it in glasses and put them in the freezer for about 20 minutes.

Rinse the blender and then combine the chilled banana, the rest of the yogurt and malted milk powder, and 2 scoops of ice cream until smooth. Blend in 3 more scoops of ice cream until it is smooth and creamy.

Take the glasses out of the freezer and slowly add the banana layer on top of the mocha layer. Return the glasses to the freezer for about 10 more minutes. Serve the malteds with straws and long handed spoons.
