With the hot days of summer upon us, no more school books and backpacks, our children are spending more and more time outdoors. Since chalk seems to be a summer staple, at least it is around our house, I figured I’d provide you with some creative ideas to keep your children entertained with chalk. There are so many things you can do with chalk, besides just drawing pictures.
Games and Sports
Use chalk to play games. Draw game boards on the driveway for checkers, or hangman. Checker pieces can be made from light and dark rocks, or for a messier version, let the children color rocks with two different colors of chalk. Tic Tac Toe, Hopscotch and four square are traditional games that work great in large size with chalk. You can even create your own games, make lines for racing games or make trails for follow the leader type of games. For sports you can create a mini baseball field for younger children, a goal for soccer or use it to draw boundary lines for other types of games.
Roads
Create roads for bikes to follow, or small cars and trucks. You can draw intersections and stop signs and police stations and almost anything your imagination can develop. Make some of the roads curvy, some straight, and your children will be provided with hours of fun, unless it rains of course.
Messages
Leave messages for dad when he returns home from work, or a special visitor. My children love to leave special messages for my neighbor, who they are especially close to. They tell her they love her, they write thank you notes, and even tell her secrets through chalk or draw pictures for her. You might wish to be sure that your neighbors or friends don’t have a problem with having children drawing on their driveway first.
