In an earlier blog, Witch Hazel Makes a Great Toner, I shared one of my mother’s favorite frugal secrets. She always had such glorious skin and a youthful appearance. Here is another one of her favorite staples for beauty, a soak that replenishes lost magnesium and soothes the skin. it can also be used as a gentle scrub to slough away dead skin cells and give you a healthy glow.
What is this miracle product? It is a lovely little soak and scrub imported from Paris, France worth every penny of the $45 an ounce you pay for it.
Okay, you got me, I’m just kidding. This is a blog all about frugal living after all. The product I am really talking about is probably in that expensive boutique soak and scrub. But it of course, it is very frugal. For about $2.50, you can get a carton of epsom salts that will last a very long time.
Epsom salts can be pour directly in your bath water to soften skin. You can also create custom bath salts by adding a few drops of an essential oil, such as lavender, and a bit of food coloring. Store you custom bath salts in an airtight container. Home made bath salts would make a great gift or addition to a gift basket.
Epsom salts also makes a nice foot soak that will refresh your feet and leave them soft. I’ve also used it to soften hang nails. Just pour some salts into a bucket and add water as hot as you can stand it.
For a great scrub, use handfuls of wet epsom salts as a scrub in the shower. This is basically the same treatment you might get in a high-end spa. If you want to get a little more pampering, mix two cups of epsom salts with 1/4 cup of Vaseline and a drop or two of essential oil.
By the way, epsom salts can also be used as a natural salt laxative, although I have never tried it myself.
