Frugal Car Rental

blue car Need to rent a car? Here are some ways to get that car for less than what others are paying. In some cases, you can even “rent” a car for free. Here is how.

if you are renting a car at your travel destination, try this frugal tip. Reserve an economy car, but then show up at the rental desk last in line. It is amazing how few economy cars that car rental companies actually have on their lot. Chances are that when you arrive, all of the economy cars will be gone, and you will be given the option to upgrade to a larger vehicle. This is how one friend of mine fit her three kids, husband and one parent in a rental car while paying the economy car price.

When renting a car, it is almost always a good idea to choose unlimited milage. This is especially true if you are taking a long trip. If you choose a milage allowance and then go over it, the fees can be very hefty.

If you want to drive to your destination, you can get a car for free. All you need to do is to find a company that is in the business of moving cars. Very often, folks who are moving, whether permanently or seasonally, choose to fly to their destination. They want their car or cars available to them, and so they will hire a company to transport the car or drive it to their new location. If you register with one of these companies, you can have the opportunity of getting a car for free. All you need to do is to make sure that the car arrives at the owner’s destination. The company usually pays for the gas for the trip. You will need to stick to a certain amount of milage, so no long side trips will be possible, but think of the money you will save on the trip!
