Frugal Christmas Entertainment

This year, why not spend most of your time preparing for Christmas by taking advantage of all of the free and low cost Christmas entertainment and activities, instead of spending that time shopping (which is not very frugal at all).

Here are some of my favorite frugal Christmas entertainment activities.

Breakfast with Santa

This time of year, there are many opportunities to experience breakfast with Santa. This can be fun because the kids will generally get a longer time talking with Santa than if they visited him for a quick photo at the mall. Breakfast with Santa can be pricey in certain upscale places. For inexpensive alternatives, check with your local town civic organizations. They will usually hold inexpensive pancake breakfast that includes Santa.

Train Rides

Many train lines will offer special trains with Santa or a holiday theme. These may be historic trains or modern trains that only go a short distance and then return. While prices can vary, they are usually a good run for your money.

Christmas Lights

Take advantage of all the light show that is already around you, thanks to your neighbors. Families tend to try and outdo each other, so if you hit one of those type of neighborhoods, you’ll have plenty to enjoy. This activity is free, minus the cost of gas to drive and perhaps some home made hot cocoa.

Christmas Music

We just put on a great Christmas festival at our church that featured lots of live Christmas music that was all for free. From brass horns, to a harp to vocal performances, there were different concerts offered each night. Look around your community for other events like this.

Live Nativity

Many churches in the area will feature nights with a live nativity during the Christmas season. Imagine being able to talk to Mary, Joseph or the wise men. Some of the characters really get into it, and there are often live animals to go along with the people in costume.
