Frugal Container Gardening

Yes, I know that we still have a long way to go until Spring arrives, but it is okay to do a little planning and dreaming, right? Container gardening can be fun and very frugal, especially if it is food that you grow in your containers. Containers can be placed almost anywhere, even if you have only a small space to work with. You can also move the containers around to get a new look or to allow your plants to get the most sun that they need.

But before you go out and purchase all of your supplies, why not try using some common objects that you might already have in order to grow your container garden. This will save you some money, and make your container food practically free.

One of my favorite items for container gardening is a large olive oil can. You can get the jumbo 3-liter containers at a warehouse grocery store or a store that supplies restaurants. You can also get empty cans for the asking from your local Italian restaurant. The cans are colorful and great for growing tomatoes, peppers, onions, herbs and more.

First cut off the top of the container and then smooth any rough edges using a metal file, so you won’t get cut. Punch a few drainage holes in the bottom. Then fill the can with dirt and plant something special.

Pet supply containers

We purchase cat food in bulk for our kitty, and therefore have a bunch of nice plastic containers that are idea for planting. A couple of drainage holes have to be drilled in the bottom of course, but that is it. You can leave the containers plain or decorate the outsides with paint.

Container gardening containers can be made out of practically anything. A friend of mine curb shopped a small children’s playhouse, bright it home, filled it with dirt and turned it into a garden. It is a little too large to be considered movable, once it is filled, but I thought this was creative enough to illustrate the point.
