Enjoy doing crafts but don’t want to spend a lot? Use the following tips to get great supplies for frugal crafting.
I happened to be in a chain craft supply store last week looking for some supplies for my son’s pirate birthday party that we are planning for the summer. It is amazing how expensive all of those craft supplies are! A little unpainted piece of thin wood in the shape of a palm tree cost nearly a dollar. Painted, that same tree rose to $2.99! A bucket of fun foam shapes for a child was the size of a sand pail and cost nearly $8! Rubber stamps? Anywhere from $7.99 to $25.99. I was afraid to check the prices on much else.
I’m not used to spending so much on craft supplies. Here are some of our tips on finding great stuff in a frugal way.
Thrift stores are a wonderful place to find craft supplies. They always seem stocked with kits and supplies for projects that someone bought in a fit of passion and then abandoned to be later donated. Many of these supplies are still sealed in their original packaging. Cross stitch kits, untouched yarn, candle making kits, hooks and needles of all sizes and more are all to be had. Look in the section of the store where household goods are kept. That is usually where you will find these treasures. Make your own rubber stamps. I like to use rubber stamps to make cards and do a little bit of scrapbooking. I can fall in love with many of the cute designs in the stores. But I am very selective. I only buy a stamp I know I will use over and over again. To fill out my stamp collection, I simply make my own, using rubber erasers and pieces of wood. For large stamps to use on fabric or walls, a cut apple or potato works wonderfully, too.
