Here is a frugal (cheap) way to get some nice new metal tie backs for you curtains at bout 1/12th of the cost.
We’ve finally given up on being able to redesign our living room and dining room this year and have started to put the old existing curtains back up on the windows. To be honest, they really aren’t bad curtains, although they don’t exactly match with the colors on the respective walls. One thing that is hard to get used to is having curtains on these windows at all. That is because we spent the entire summer without anything there at all, and I am really used to all of the nice sunlight that filters into the rooms.
One solution to maintaining the warm bright rooms while still dressing the windows are tiebacks. The nice thing about tie backs is they are easy to use and can still allow you to close the curtains as needed for privacy or warmth when the cold weather sets in.
I started pricing hardware tie backs, and they are a lot more expensive that I thought they might be. The simplest ones cost $12 a pair. That is hard to swallow when I might not even need them for very long, depending on when we can redesign those rooms. Fortunately, I do have a better, more frugal option.
For $1, I can get a pair of tiebacks. How? By repurposing another gadget. Screw hooks that are made to hold bicycles are strong and easily installed. They are metal hooks with vinyl coating. The screw hooks come in a variety of colors, and I can easily customize the look of the tie backs with a glue gun and a variety of materials, such as ribbon, wooden craft shapes or silk flowers. Old wooden spools might create a quaint homey look, as well. And I will have saved at least $11 per pair.
