Who doesn’t love a good deal? And there is nothing but good deals to be had at the dollar store. In fact, it’s a great place to start when you are looking for frugal decorating items. Sometimes the dollar store is just the ticket for some really cool items. But how do you know what to look for?
First, you have to be extremely sharp, yet creative when looking for a trendy, hip item at the dollar store. Sometimes, what you first see, is not what you will wind up with.
Here’s an example. We went to the dollar store and found a totally ugly vase. It really was horrible looking but the shape was really unique and fun and we thought it might be really pretty for a table centerpiece we wanted to make.
So, I could have done any number of things. I could have left it there because it was so ugly. But then I could have bought it and given it a new coat of paint, or maybe a pretty ribbon tied around it, and some silk flowers or any countless number of other ways I could have spruced it up. So what did I do?
Well, as a major scrapbooker, I have a patterned paper stash that would put most people to shame. I sorted through until a piece caught my eye that actually matched our kitchen really really well. I wound up altering the vase, using an altered art technique. I mostly decoupaged the paper to the vase, used a few embellishments and tied a ribbon around it. I would show you, except then when I was done with it, I was so proud of it, that I gave it as a gift to a friend who was celebrating her 40th and I wanted something really special to give her. She absolutely loved it, and I plan to make another for myself.
This is the start of a mini-series of articles about dollar store finds and ways to incorporate them into your home decorating. After all, even the most frugal person wants their home to reflect who they are with a little personality and style.
