I had complete sticker shock when I added up the cost all of the Easter basket goodies and fixings for three children who still believe in the Easter bunny. Since we live in an affluent area, I knew there might be a little comparing of treats when school started back the next day. Still, we have to watch the budget. Here are some ways to be frugal but still have fun for Easter.
The True Meaning
It goes without saying that we, especially kids, should be aware of the true meaning of Easter. Focus more on the reason behind the holiday, and you will be naturally frugal.
Get Out in the Community
Many communities offer plenty of Easter fun. last weekend, for example, there were at least three different community sponsored Easter egg hunts within a short driving distance of our home. Not only was attending the hunt fun for the kids, but we got to catch up with other parents. As a bonus, the sponsor let us all keep the plastic eggs that the kids found (along with treats inside), so we had some free plastic eggs for a hunt at home.
Skip the Grass
If you provide Easter baskets for your children, skip on the grass and the cellophane. While these things may seem prettier, the kids probably won’t miss them. Why pay for something that will be thrown away within minutes of seeing the baskets? If you must have a filler, use shredded paper. It is free.
Save on Candy
You can save on all of that expensive candy in one of two ways:
Include homemade treats in the baskets or in your home. Rice Krispie treats are especially popular and will cost you less than buying candy in the store. Cookies and homemade candy are great to put in there as well.
Use up candy you might have gotten on sale after Valentine’s day. When the sales got to 75 percent off, you hopefully snapped up some candy. If not, use this tip for next year. It should still be fresh, and you can always freeze most of it if you have doubts.
