Earlier this week I talked about how I am proud to be a cheapskate.
While I am not afraid to write about it, don’t expect me to shout about my frugality from the rooftops (especially when it comes to my fashion finds).
Okay, don’t get me wrong. I have a frugal friend (who will remain unnamed) who I love to share my finds with. I’ll drive to her home with paper bags in hand and dump them on her kitchen table… “Check out these jeans I got for a buck…aren’t they darling?” – I squeal with delight. “Oooohhh ohhhh ohhh…and I can’t wait to wear this jacket next winter.” She gets just as excited as I do about my finds. “Where did you get those shoes?” “Goodwill – winter clearance rack”…
I’ll also brag about my frugal finds with my husband who is as thrifty as I am. Quite honestly, I think it is a turn-on for him. “Honey…I got these dress pants for four dollars at the thrift store”… “ahhhh….nice”, he’ll respond. “They look great on you”. (Sometimes I wonder if he’d be as complementary if I told him that they cost $90).
99.9% of my friends and family members probably don’t know how truly frugal I am (unless they read my blog, of course). When someone complements me on my 50 cent purse or “2 for one” vintage earrings, I’ve learned to simply say, “thank you” (while secretly hoping that they don’t ask me where I got them).
My anonymous friend, however sounds just like my dad after a successful hunting trip. When someone says, “hey…I love your new jeans…” she’ll respond, “gee thanks….you wouldn’t believe the story behind these.” “I was searching for a frying pan at the Goodwill and someone must have put them in the wrong section”. “They didn’t have a price, so I ended up getting them for 99 cents.” “Can you believe it?”
Frankly, while I love a successful, thrifty “hunting trip” too…when it comes to frugal fashion, sometimes a simple “thank you” works wonders.
