Many people seem to think that cats are the easy pet and that they just lay around all day and don’t do much. While that is true in many cases and I can certainly relate, our cat loves to play and will do it all day (with a few catnaps for good measure) if she has enough things to do. However, I hate purchasing all the expensive toys on the market, so I was sure, just sure there was a way to keep her amused without the expense. I was right.
Dangles
Cats love things that dangle. They will bat at it and bat at it until they are so tired they practically fall over. Using ribbon, string or an old shoelace, tie almost anything “safe” to the end of the string. This could be a toy they have or even just a leaf or feather. Tie it to the bottom of a chair or table and leave it there. I promise, your kitten or cat will find it quickly and have a blast with it.
Lights
Whether it is a laser pointer or a flashlight, cats will typically spend a great deal of time chasing the mysterious form on the floor. The smaller the beam is on the ground the more enthralled they seem to be.
Boxes
I have no idea if I have been the exception to the rules, but I have now had three cats that have been totally addicted to boxes. In fact, I get a monthly package in the mail in a Priority Mail box. She squishes herself into the box and will have quite a good time sleeping or playing. She loves it when the kids tap on the outside of the box, but be careful, claws can be sharp and cats are fast! Whenever a box comes into the home, we can basically expect her to check it out and if she can climb inside, poof she’s gone.
Nature
Bring nature indoors for your cat. If your cat isn’t likely to eat things that she plays with, offer her a sticky gum ball or an acorn from a tree outside. More than likely you will see her zipping back and forth chasing it all over the house. There should be some supervision with this, just in case she does decide to try and eat it.
Milk Rings
Anybody who has a cat, has probably found this trick. Cats love milk rings. Period. Enough said. Pull the milk ring off the milk and drop it on the floor. It won’t be long until your cat discovers it and then look out! It’s the most hysterical and entertaining thing my cat does I think.
