Don’t you just love walking into one of those model homes (or maybe visiting through a design show on television) and seeing how elegantly everything is put together? One thing that I usually notice is all of the fresh cut flowers. They do really make a difference in the home, and yet how many of us actually have fresh cut flowers in our own home on a regular basis?
There are a couple of reasons why having fresh flowers at home is important. Studies have shown that looking at attractive or bright colored flowers can boost your mood. So think of fresh flowers as part of keeping everyone happy and healthy.
It is hard, somewhat, to justify having fresh cut flowers when you are trying to curb expenses. That is why it pays to find ways to have those flowers, but to have them frugally.
The cheapest way to have fresh cut flowers for your home is to grow them yourself. A small flower garden is pretty inexpensive to maintain, and the more you cut your flowers, in general, the more blooms you will have. Good frugal choices include daisies, sunflowers, carnations, astors and others. In the fall, mums can last for weeks after they have been cut.
If you don’t want to grow flowers yourself, think of ways that you can stretch out their use. This way your arrangements last longer and the cost per arrangement goes down. Learn how to care for them properly, keeping them watered appropriately, and using a floral block and water treatments to extend the life of your flowers.
Sometimes you can find flowers being given away for free. Check with local event halls after events, churches (although many deliver their flowers to those who are ill or homebound) and businesses. They just may be turning over their displays and have healthy flowers that will otherwise be trashed or composted.
